Shale Gas and Oil–the U.S. Energy Revolution

Lecture TopicShale Gas and Oil–the U.S. Energy Revolution

Lecturer:Prof. A. Daniel Hill, doctoral supervisor, academic advisor of SPE International Hydraulic Fracturing Technology Conference and Exhibition

Lecture Time: Monday, April 1, 2019, 10:20-11:50 a.m.

Lecture Location: State Key Laboratory A403 Academic Hall

Organization of Lecturer: Department of Petroleum Engineering, Texas A&M University

All students and staff are welcome!

Lecture ContentIn the past 10 years, production of natural gas and oil from unconventional reservoirs in the United States has grown tremendously, completely changing the global energy market. This talk presents a history of this remarkable development. The drilling and hydraulic fracturing technology that has enabled this rapid development will be explained. The realities about supposed environmental impacts of hydraulic fracturing will also be reviewed. The recent advances in hydraulic fracturing technology that have enabled this boom to continue even with low oil prices will also be reviewed.

About the Lecturer:

A. Daniel Hillis a Professor and holder of the Noble Endowed Chair in the Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M University. Previously, he taught for twenty-two years at The University of Texas at Austin after spending five years in industry. He holds a B.S. degree from Texas A&M University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from The University of Texas at Austin, all in chemical engineering. He is the author of the Society of Petroleum Engineering (SPE) monograph, Production Logging: Theoretical and Interpretive Elements, co-author of the textbook, Petroleum Production Systems, 1st and 2nd editions, co-author of an SPE book, Multilateral Wells, and author of about 200 technical papers and five patents. He is a Distinguished Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and has received numerous SPE awards with the most recent being the John Franklin Carll Award in 2014. He currently serves on the SPE Editorial Review Committee, the SPE Hydraulic Fracturing Technical Conference program committee, is the advisor to the 2018 SPE International Hydraulic Fracturing Technology Committee, and is a member of the SPE Awards Committee. Professor Hill is an expert in the areas of production engineering, well completions, well stimulation, production logging, and complex well performance (horizontal and multilateral wells), and has presented lectures and courses and consulted on these topics throughout the world.
